A Ryzen 7 9800X3D reaches 7.3 GHz!

A new world frequency record from Gigabyte, and a new title for HiCookie. Indeed, the brand’s in-house clocker has managed to push a Ryzen 7 9800X3D to the insane frequency of 7.3 GHz. As you’ll read, to reach this frequency, the CPU had to be pushed hard, especially its VCore!

To achieve such a score, HiCookie turned up the heat on the VCore side of the processor. In fact, during the exercise, the VCore was running at a voltage of 1.631V! As for other frequencies, the multiplier coefficient was set to x71, while the bus frequency was 101.57 MHz! Clearly, the processor saw a lot, all the more so as the SMT(hyperthreadring) was deactivated to ensure maximum stability. Of course, HiCookie used a Gigabyte motherboard, a model dedicated to extremeoverclocking, as it was the famous Aorus X870 Tachyon. As for cooling, to keep up with 1.16V of VCore, there’s no choice but to turn to extreme solutions: liquid nitrogen. Without it, the CPU burns out and you can kiss it good-bye.

Next, the configuration was put through its paces on Cinebench 2024, where the measured frequencies had to be lowered. However, the processor still ran at 6648 MHz with all its cores and hyperthreading active. With this configuration, the score falls and the CPU displays 1733 pts. By comparison, a 9800X3D overclocked with PBO scores 1339 pts. This represents a 29.5% performance gain for a 25.5% increase in frequency. Even so, overclocking a 9800X3D under nitrogen remains a technical challenge, as the CPU will hardly fit under a filled bucket (unless you know how to do it, which is HiCookie’s case), and we’re told that the cold bug is around -130 to -150°C. So we’re left to fill the bucket with nitrogen. So we find ourselves having to fill the bucket sparingly and keep an eye on the temperature to prevent the config from crashing due to the cold, and always play on the limit between too hot and too cold.

In short, another fine performance that was sure to liven up the new product launch ceremony in Shanghai.
