It’s been a busy morning for AMD, and more specifically for the brand’s graphics cards. We saw that the new-generation desktop GPUs will adopt a new nomenclature, whilea potential reference design was previewed. Now we learn that the mobile ranges will exploit a different architecture to the PCIe versions. On the one hand, we’ll have RDNA 3.5 and on the other RDNA 4!
RDNA 3.5 and RDNA 4 coexisting at AMD!
At the moment, there are no big surprises when it comes to the architecture used by AMD for its desktop graphics cards. The company will indeed be using RDNA 4 in its future cards, and the nomenclature has changed for the occasion. As we said earlier, forget the RX 8000 and make way for the RX 9000.
However, another architecture is planned with RDNA 3.5. The aim of this architecture is to power mobile GPUs and, more specifically, iGPUs, the graphics part integrated into processors. The Strix Halo CPUs will use it.
For the moment, nothing has been said about dedicated mobile GPUs, the graphics processors found alongside iGPUs in laptops, for example. However, on this subject, we assume that the Reds will be offering RDNA 4 GPUs on laptops. So we can expect Navi 44 and Navi 48-based RX 9000Ms in our future laptops.
Of course, we’ll have to take all this with a grain of salt, since these are just rumours originating from the @9550pro (HXL) account on X. In any case, we should know more at CES in early January. As a reminder, we’re expecting a lot from AMD, with the announcement of the RX 9000, the B850 motherboards (and others) and the new Ryzen 9000X3D processors (9900X3D and 9950X3D), so there’s clearly going to be a lot to look forward to!
