Is the RTX 5090 going to be discontinued?

Right now, the RTX 5090 market is a total mess. In fact, the card literally costs as much as a nice two-week trip to Japan for a family of three. Some retailers, are even listing the card at over €7,350 for the cheapest option, with models currently in stock selling mostly for around €7,450. But worse still, NVIDIA could effectively phase out this card by allocating its GPU to the production of RTX Pro cards, for example.

RTX 5090: A Card on the Verge of Disappearance?

But who could even afford an RTX 5090 at current prices?

L'unboxing de la NVIDIA RTX 5090 Founders Edition

At the current prices listed by retailers, the card is selling for 250% above its MSRP. As a reminder, the RTX 5090 was originally priced at €2,099 in France. It was already expensive at its original price, but now, at over €7,000, it’s simply out of the question. The card literally costs as much as a used car in good condition. Aside from a few very wealthy individuals or professionals, it’s hard to see who could afford to make such a purchase.

Finally, according to MEGAsizeGPU (@Zed__Wang), NVIDIA is now reportedly reserving production of its GB202 chips for its professional graphics cards. As it stands, the chip would be more valuable since it would be used in cards worth more than double the current value of the RTX 5090. One example is the RTX Pro 6000 Blackwell series, which is based on the same GPU.

The RTX 5080: The New Flagship?

As things stand, with the GB202 reportedly leaving the consumer market (to be confirmed), the RTX 5080 would represent NVIDIA’s new flagship. However, the card features a much more modest configuration with its GB203 (50% fewer CUDA cores ), 16 GB of VRAM, and a 256-bit bus. The bandwidth is lower: 960 GB/s compared to 1.79 TB/s. Some are speculating about the launch of a 24 GB version of the card, a model that would feature 3 GB memory chips instead of the current 2 GB. But again, no release date has been announced.
