The Ryzen 7000s may be interesting, but they are particularly hot, as we mentioned in our tests. For some, the bold shape of the IHS is not for nothing in this case. But then how to improve the temperature of a Ryzen 7000 to be able to exploit the best of this performance? Obviously, the cooling system will be crucial and will push you to make higher investments. But if you want more, the return of a good old-fashioned method seems to have proven itself… Be prepared to spend long hours polishing a Ryzen 7000 IHS.

Surfacing or polishing an IHS is obviously a final solution that makes you say goodbye to any warranty. Jayztwocents and Andreas Schilling therefore set out to “rectify” the famous IHS of a Ryzen 9 7950X. They had to remove a few millimeters of copper, sanding the IHS manually or mechanically… While preserving the integrity of the processor of course. They scraped 0.8 mm of material on the back of the IHS. Obviously, the good old method of water and marble plate is still valid but the use of a mechanical aid was necessary to accelerate the maneuver. And we have to admit that if the exercise is dangerous, the game is worth the risk. With this method, the 7950X went to temperatures between 85ºc and 88ºc, whereas originally, with the same frequency, it went to 95ºc. This gain also allowed the Cores to be pushed to 5.4 GHz at a temperature of 90 ºc.
The surfacing method is known. Its interest confirms that changing the IHS will be beneficial to a Ryzen 7000 if you want to get the most out of it. Of course this technique is risky and you have to assume the risk of losing your CPU permanently.
