Via an initial Italian review, we learn that the Ryzen 9 9900X takes a beating compared to the Ryzen 7 7800X3D. Or at least, that’s the conclusion that should be drawn if we’re focusing solely on video game use!
Ryzen 7 7800X3D: better performance, cooler, less power-hungry than a Ryzen 9 9900X!
To sum things up, it turns out that AMD’s X3D CPU is a serious gaming challenger. Coupled with an RTX 4090, 7200 MT/s memory, all mounted on an X670E motherboard, the CPU outperforms the 9900X on average over ten games.
Overall, over an average of ten games, the current-generation CPU performed around 9% better at 1080p. In 1440p, the gap narrows, but remains at 5.6% compared to 6.01% in UHD. The worst thing is to compare the minimum FPS:
- 1080p : +11.08%
- 1440p : +7.5%
- 2160p : +9.78%
In practical terms, this is a Ryzen 9 9900X that’s struggling. It performs less well in games, consumes more power (107W compared with just 53W for X3D) and is hotter (67°C compared with 63°C). Finally, the last nail in the coffin: the sales price, which should be higher. Remember that the 7800X3D can currently be found at €385, with the possibility of dropping to €350 depending on discounts. As for the 9900X, from what we could see here, it would appear that the CPU is more expensive.
To summarise, unless you have a mixed usage: application + games, or even 100% applications, the Ryzen 9000s can be forgotten. Furthermore, AMD has already anticipated this by announcing that the 7000X3Ds would still be the kings of gaming. The only solution is to wait for the 9000X3Ds, which are expected to turbocharge gaming !
