The Seagate brand has just announced new high-capacity hard drives. The company has unveiled its Exos M with a total capacity of 36 TB. It didn’t take long for the company to go from 32TB to 36TB. Last December, the company unveiled 32TB drives from the same series. At that point, the brand was merely levelling the score with Western Digital, which unveiled its Ultrastar drives with the same capacity in mid-October 2024.

Exos M: 36TB of storage!

Seagate Exos MWith this announcement, the company has regained the lead in the storage capacity race. With 36TB, the brand is ahead of its rivals Toshiba and Western Digital.

In order to offer such capacities, the brand has opted for its Mozaic 3 platform coupled with HAMR technology, which incorporates ten platters of 3.6 TB each. By exploiting all this, the brand is able to reduce costs per TB by 25% and consumption per TB by 36%, at least according to the company’s marketing.

In any case, the important thing to remember is that the first batches are starting to be sent to certain customers such as AWS and Microsoft. We’re talking here about large hyperscale data centres.

Nevertheless, Seagate has announced that it has no intention of stopping there. The company has announced the availability of disk trays with a capacity of 6 TB. In the near future, we should be seeing 60TB hard drives! Little by little, we’re getting closer to 100 TB of storage, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves either!

Be that as it may, in terms of density, Seagate is also winning the battle, since Western Digital needs eleven platters to offer 32TB, compared with ten here. Toshiba does not fare too badly, since their 31TB hard disk uses ten platters compared with eleven for the 32TB model.
