Western Digital has announced new hard drives with very high capacities. Naturally, these solutions are aimed at the professional sector and data centres. The brand is offering hard drives with capacities of up to 32 TB!
Western Digital: 32TB hard drives!
The company offers several ranges of high-capacity hard drives. With its UltraStar DC HC690 series, we find the very best in terms of capacity from the brand, with units reaching 32TB. To achieve this, the company integrates up to 11 platters in this model, while exploiting SMR recording technology. In terms of performance, the brand quotes transfer speeds of 257 MiB/s (~270 MB/s) and low power consumption of 5.5W.
Elsewhere, the UltraStar DC HC590 series boasts lower capacities than the HC690, down to a maximum of 26 TB, with higher transfer speeds reaching 288 MiB/s (~302 MB/s). Power consumption is slightly up, however, at 5.6W idle. It seems to offer a good performance/consumption ratio.
Finally, there’s the Gold series, which also boasts 26TB of storage capacity. However, this range is aimed at system integrators and resellers. Here we have an MTBF of 2.5 million hours and a 5-year manufacturer’s warranty.
