As time goes by, more information about the Ryzen 7 9850X3D is being revealed. This time, it’s about the official price announced by AMD. On X, David McAfee announced an official price tag of $499 for this new CPU… The only new feature is its turbo frequency, which is 400 MHz higher than the Ryzen 7 9800X3D.
Ryzen 7 9850X3D: $499 and launching on January 29 at 3 p.m.!
Well, with this announcement, we can say that the processor no longer holds any real surprises for us. In fact, we have known its configuration for a long time. This model has eight hyperthreaded Zen 5 cores grouped together in a CCD. This CCD also has 32 MB of base L3 cache with an additional 64 MB layer of 3D V-Cache. The total L3 capacity is therefore 96 MB, while there is 1 MB of L2 per core.
The frequencies have been improved, with the turbo frequency in particular offering 400 MHz more than the 9800X3D. Otherwise, the base frequency remains at 4.7 GHz, with no change in this regard. The same applies to the thermal envelope, which remains at 120W.
In reality, what can we expect from this processor? Improved performance, that’s for sure. But we still need to qualify this, as these performance gains will not be dramatic. Clearly, the 9850X3D will not double the performance of the 9800X3D. Expect a few percent improvement, but not much more. This is why the price difference is not that significant. Remember that the 9800X3D was officially announced at a price of $479, so the additional cost between these two models is only $20.
This raises questions about AMD’s motivations for releasing such a product. Is it a marketing trick? Is it surplus stock that allows AMD to increase its product range? It’s hard to say. At least this newcomer doesn’t cost much more.
