Nvidia’s next series of RTX 4000 graphics cards, named Ada Lovelace, should arrive in September according to the latest rumors. While everyone seems to be worried about the continuing availability and pricing issues, the latest gossip suggests that if you switch to these cards you’ll have another worry as well. Indeed, it seems possible that in order to enjoy an RTX 4000 you will probably need a new power supply for the high-end models.

TDP of the RTX 4000: fact or fiction?

For some time now, discussions about the interest of the future Ada Lovelace architecture have revolved around the TDP of the latter among some leakers (Kopite7kimi and Greymon55 generally well informed) RTX 4000 However, we must remain very careful about this information which is only speculation at this time. Indeed, they think that the future RTX 4080 will have a TGP of 450 W and that of the RTX 4080 Ti would be 600 W. And when we talk about the RTX 4090, the latter could require a monstrous 800 W. For the record, the GPUs of future RTX 40xx cards from the greens will be produced at TSMC in 5nm. So it seems particularly shocking that the move to 5nm is combined with such an uncontrolled slide in TDP. This gossip seems to be the talk of the town at the moment but we have no serious confirmation or the beginning of a lead on this subject. Just think about this for a moment: If we were to add the TDP of these cards to that of the current generation CPUs, it would lead us nicely towards a generalization of 1000W and more power supplies on our next PCs.
