Things are gradually settling down, with RTX 4090 prices trending downwards. After rising shortly before the US sanctions against China came into force, things are starting to ease off.

RTX 4090: prices well down!

RTX 4090 PrixAs you can see from this small compilation of prices by 3DCenter, the bill for a 4090 is well on the way down. At its lowest, this card was priced at ~€1600 in Germany in August 2023, reaching a high of €1950 in November of the same year.

The reasons behind this price rise are simple: the entry into force of US sanctions against China. As a result, as many cards as possible were redirected to China, in order to sell as much as possible before the embargo came into force. As a result, stocks in other parts of the world are becoming scarce, and prices are rising.

But since December 2023, prices have been falling. The reason is simple: in the meantime, NVIDIA launched its RTX 4090D, a model specially designed for China. The worldwide supply of cards has therefore resumed its normal course, once again driving prices down.

Now the question is whether we’ll see cards billed at €1,600 again in the same way as last August. It remains to be seen whether demand for the card will drop, whether NVIDIA will produce the required quantities, and whether tensions will escalate in the Red Sea, one of the gateways to world trade. In short, there are many unknowns in the equation.
