Nova Lake looks very promising, and leaks have been multiplying over the past few days. Of course, as always, we must remain cautious. While we know that these processors will use a new socket, the choice of motherboard chipset could determine access to the best performance.
Only premium motherboards will unlock the full potential of Nova Lake’s 52 cores.
There could be more platforms for Nova Lake than we have seen with previous generations. We could see Z990, Z970, W980, Q970, and B960 models. The Z990 is obviously the most interesting. This chipset would be the only one capable of delivering the full power needed for optimal performance of the 52-core models. As we saw earlier, the TDP could be very high when this version of Nova Lake is running at full potential. Reading between the lines, this does not necessarily mean that the high-end version of Nova Lake will require a Z990 (or whatever name it will be given at the time of release). However, this version will allow you to get the most out of this processor.
Even more expensive motherboards?
It must be said that the inflation of motherboard prices seems to have validated the idea that enthusiasts are willing to spend more, even though until now, apart from the design, the additional features did not offer much more. Intel could therefore push for the emergence of a new range of motherboards designed for this target market. It would feature robust voltage regulators (VRMs) and enhanced cooling systems, unlocking access to higher levels of performance. Despite the high price tag, it could become the preferred option for demanding gamers, enthusiasts, and extreme overclockers.
Nova Lake and Zen 6 on track for the second half of 2026?
There is conflicting information regarding the release of Nova Lake. Several media outlets are mentioning the second half of 2026, while our sources are talking about early 2027. Admittedly, it’s much the same for AMD. However, AMD will have the easier task with existing platforms that will be compatible with the new CPUs. Ultimately, Nova Lake-S processors are expected to put AMD back in the saddle, which will respond with its new Ryzen processors based on the Zen 6 architecture. On paper, the latter seem less promising. But both AMD and Intel are still keeping a lot of their cards close to their chest for the moment, so let’s remain cautious.
