Riot Games is reportedly planning a major modernization of the game, codenamed “League Next”. This information was initially leaked without context, suggesting the arrival of a League of Legends 2. However, this is not the case, as the project is in fact a major update of the current version. According to internal sources at Riot Games, this initiative is primarily based on an architectural restructuring of the video game. The aim is to combine previously independent technical elements: the existing launcher, frequently decried, will be replaced by an incorporation within a unified game engine. This should resolve persistent problems and enable complex elements (such as champion models) to be rendered smoothly directly in the user interface.

But the bulk of the work will clearly be on the game itself. League of Legends’ iconic mode, known as Summoner’s Rift, is set to receive a complete graphical update, as well as changes to its gameplay mechanics. In addition, features such as runes, which activate before a session is launched, will also undergo a thorough overhaul. Riot promises visually impressive rendering , but optimized for a wide range of machines. This requires a complete rewrite of the game’s technical base. Since its release in 2009, the game has been built on an infrastructure that, while robust, is now showing its limits.

“We want League of Legends to be as impressive to watch as it is strategic to play”, says a Riot representative.

League of Legends: A major update in 2027

Last but not least, another logical objective is to democratize access to the game. League of Legends is perceived as one of the most difficult multiplayer titles for newcomers to access. Riot intends to correct this image in order to further broaden the audience for its flagship title. This will at last be corrected, thanks to an unprecedented technological infrastructure. Riot Games intends to reveal more about these developments during the period between the MSI and Worlds competitions, probably from May to September 2026. For the moment, it’s unclear in what form the publisher will communicate.

For several years now, Riot has been diversifying its catalog while continuing to develop the League of Legends universe for which it is renowned. With this project, the ambition is clearly to renew the game’s audience, while consolidating its current base
