La RX 7900 GRE and bench !

The RX 7900 GRE is now official, and our Chinese colleagues at Expreview were able to test the card. It appears to be a good rival to NVIDIA’s RTX 4070 non-Ti, while appearing slower than the RX 7900 XT… But then again, it’s a neutered version.

RX 7900 GRE: how does it perform?

AMD RX 7900 GRE Fire Strike

On synthetic benchmarks, AMD’s new card performs averagely well… In fact, it depends on what you’re looking at. Indeed, on Fire Strike, the card is put to the sword by the RX 6800 XT, an older-generation model. On the other hand, as soon as we leave this test, things are better, especially on Time Spy.

But what we’re interested in here is in-game performance. Roughly speaking, in 1080p, we find a card that does at least as well as the RTX 4070… Except on Last of Us part 1 or Diablo 4, where the GeForce card comes out on top. If you activate Ray Tracing, the situation becomes much more complicated for the little GRE, where AMD’s card achieves results that are at best equivalent to those of the RTX 4070.

In 1440p, NVIDIA’s RTX 4070 simply can’t keep up with AMD’s 7900 GRE, even on Last of Us or Diablo 4. The green card will have to settle for a tie only in these scenarios. With Ray Tracing, AMD’s new card still struggles on Cyberpunk 2077, but, aided by its 16 GB VRAM, it holds its own better in this resolution.

In UHD, the situation remains similar to 1440p, whether Ray Tracing is activated or not. Although we’d be wary of the framerate on Cyberpunk 2077 or The Last of Us pt1, where frames/sec fall below 60 fps.

Unfortunately, it’s a shame (for us) that this card is exclusive to the Chinese market. Indeed, this model retails at around $650 after conversion, and is aggressively positioned against the 4070. It’s certainly more expensive, but also more powerful. In fact, this card is positioned right between the RTX 4070 and RTX 4070 Ti in terms of performance and cost. Suffice to say, it’s sorely lacking in our market.
