He orders a Ryzen 9 9900X3D and ends up with a 3900X…

Be wary when buying used computer equipment on Amazon, as there have been countlessscams reportedby users. This time, someone bought a Ryzen 9 9900X3D and ended up with what looks like a Ryzen 9 3900X. In any case, a return is planned!

A Ryzen 9 3900X instead of a Ryzen 9 9900X3D!

Ryzen 9 9900X3D

To put it simply, a user buys a used processor on Amazon because the sale price is attractive due to heavy discounts. But upon receipt, something seems off. Several details aroused suspicion. The user posted photos of the CPU they received on Reddit, and forum users confirmed that it was a Ryzen 9 3900X.

The first clue was the copyright date indicated on the CPU’s IHS: 2019. Another element that raises suspicion is the product number, which does not correspond to a 9900X3D at all. After a quick search on CPU-World, it appears that the number “100-000000023” corresponds to the product number of a Ryzen 9 3900X. Another factor to consider is the marking on the IHS, which also does not correspond to Ryzen 9000. On AM5, the CPU reference appears clearly between the Ryzen logo and the QR code, whereas on AM4, the reference is marked above the Ryzen logo.

However, although both CPUs are 12-core/24-thread models, they are completely different. The 9900X3D is a processor based on Zen 5 architecture with a total of 140 MB of cache, a maximum frequency of 5.5 GHz, and a TDP of 120W. The 3900X is a CPU based on Zen 2 architecture, with 70 MB of cache (in total). The turbo frequency is listed at 4.6 GHz, while the thermal envelope is 105W.

Faced with this, users are preparing for the return of the CPU. That’s a good thing.
