It’s Nintendo’s best console launch ever. 4 days after its official launch, the Switch 2 has become the fastest-selling console in Nintendo’s history. The new Nintendo console has sold over 3.5 million units since its release on June 5. These worldwide sales exceed those of all previous Nintendo consoles, including the original Switch and Wii.Switch 2

Once again Nintendo stands out, but this time by highlighting the loyalty of its community. It’s also worth bearing in mind the sales figures for the Switch 1. To date, eight years after its release, the Switch 1 has sold over 150 million units, with a ramp-up that is often symmetrical with the launch of the brand’s exclusive games. Nintendo has unveiled several Switch 2 titles for release throughout 2025. And without too much suspense, they will all be highlights for sales of the new console.

Switch 2: Nintendo no longer alone in the handheld arena

So, if you’re not an absolute Nintendo fan, what do you need to know about this new console? First of all, the gap with rival consoles (PS5, Xbox) is abysmal… But this has never really bothered Nintendo. Where things could get complicated for Big N is that competition in the portable gaming sector is growing all the time. These include, of course, PC consoles such as Steam Deck, or the offensive that Microsoft is currently waging on Asus and its Rog Xbox Ally. Here again, Nintendo could still be protected by its exclusive catalog and a more competitive price than PC solutions (€499 with Mario Kart World).

But it’s clear that the lines are shifting, and we can expect a very busy end to the year on this subject. Up until now, Nintendo has succeeded in breaking out of its fan base with a product that is easy to use, reliable and versatile enough to reach all family users. But what will happen with aggressive offers from portable PC consoles integrating Game Pass?
