DDR5: the transition is accelerating

As we all know, the march towards DDR5 is inevitable. However, price is a huge barrier for most of us. The PC ecosystem has also found that the adoption of DDR5 memory is happening at a slower pace than expected. Clearly, demand for DDR5 memory has stagnated due to its high price. And with the recent drop in DDR4 prices, many are still reluctant to switch to DDR5, the benefits of which are, for the moment, hard to see. For the moment, it seems as if the transition from DDR4 to DDR5 has not really started. Patriot Viper Venom DDR5

Transition to DDR5: consistent prices by the end of the year?

But the ramp-up of production should allow the market to evolve favorably in this area in the coming months. Indeed, Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix and Micron Technology have all increased their production of DDR5 chips in an effort to accelerate the industry’s transition from DDR4 to DDR5 DRAM. According to several sources reported by Digitimes, DDR5 chip prices could fall and approach those of DDR4 by the end of 2022, allowing for a substantial increase in DDR5 penetration by 2023. For the past few weeks, the trend seems to have been confirmed. The price of a GB of DDR5 has gone from about 15 € a few months ago to about 5 €/GB today. Thus, a DDR5 kit in 32 GB 4800 has gone from 430 € to 154 €.
