A short press release from Corsair here to self-promote. Basically, we learn that Corsair power supplies will be perfectly compatible and capable of powering the next generation of graphics cards. In other words, there should be no change of power supply connector, especially on NVIDIA graphics cards!

Corsair’s power supplies capable of powering the next generation of GPUs !

Alims CorsairWith the RTX 40, NVIDIA inaugurated a new power connector. Initially, the company abandoned the classic 8-pin PCIe connector in favour of the 12VHPWR, a more compact connector capable of delivering high levels of power. However, the latter was the cause of a number of burnt-out cards, as it was not secure enough.

To improve the safety aspect, adjustments have been made to the dimensions of the pins. In particular, the sensor pins have been shortened to prevent the configuration from starting up if the connector is insufficiently depressed. This new standard is called 12V-2×6.

In short, Corsair’s press release indicates that its power supplies are fully capable of supporting the next generation of graphics cards. We can therefore assume that NVIDIA will not be changing the connector… At least, no change of standard. If you use a sufficiently large block, you should be able to power an RTX 5090 without having to change hardware!

All that remains to be seen is whether AMD will also exploit the 12V-2×6or whether it will stick with traditional 8-pin PCIe.
