After a mixed launch, with opinions divided between NVIDIA killer or too expensive, too slow and too late cards, AMD actually confirms to compete with the RTX 4080 instead of the 4090.
NVIDIA will remain master of the high-end this generation?
This November 3rd was the launch of the new AMD RDNA3 GPUs, starting with the RX 7900 XT and RX 7900 XTX, graphics cards that have made a strong impression … But not totally in the right sense of the word. While the latest leaks released were almost all accurate, some disappointment was caused largely by the frequency announcements of the two cards…
AMD did not say everything… A good surprise to come?
Indeed, while the RDNA2 GPUs based on 7nm TSMC reached very high frequencies, the RDNA3 have only a slight bump of 8% in boost (2500 MHz for the 7900 XTX against 2310 MHz for the 6950 XT) despite the switch to 5nm etching. However, it should be noted that AMD is not clear on this subject. It is not impossible that the reds reserve us a small surprise. Indeed, it is announced that its GPUs will be able to be brought above 3 GHz: case to follow.
This disappointment is accompanied by another news from PC World, where Frank Azor (Chief Architect of Gaming Solutions and Gaming Marketing) announced publicly that the Radeon 7900 XTX was in fact a competitor to the RTX 4080 16GB and not to the RTX 4090 as expected (AMD had managed to compete with the 3090 at the time).
That’s why no comparison was made with the RTX 4090, and since the RTX 4080 is not yet officially released, AMD compared its card only to the RX 6950 XT.
