A modder going by the name SlickBuys Mods and Repairs took a look at portable consoles. He simply modified an ROG Xbox Ally X by adding even more memory. It’s simple: the console went from 24 GB of RAM to 64 GB. However, the operation is much more complex than on a PC, as it does not involve changing memory modules. No, it involves soldering and modifying the BIOS. Not something just anyone can do!
A ROG Xbox Ally X that goes from 24 to 64 GB of memory!
To upgrade to 64 GB of memory, the console had to be disassembled to remove the motherboard. Once removed, the modder had access to the console’s memory chips, which he then desoldered and replaced with new modules. We’re talking about four 16 GB modules replacing the original 6 GB chips. Of course, this involved the usual process of cleaning the PCB, etc.
But once the memory was in place, it had to be ensured that it was correctly recognized by the console. To do this, recognition had to be forced in the BIOS, so the BIOS chip was removed from the console and read using a hexadecimal editor. Once modified, the BIOS is soldered back onto the console while he moves two resistors on the motherboard circuit to force recognition of the new capacity installed.
Finally, all that remains is to reassemble the console, an easy step given what has been done so far. Once powered up, he launches the task manager to ensure that the machine has 64 GB of RAM, which it does. The operation is a success!
