G.Skill pays $2.4 million for RAM speed issues on packaging

G.Skill is paying up. The brand will pay no less than $2.4 million to compensate customers who were misled by the RAM frequency indicated on the packaging of RAM modules sold between January 2018 and January 2026. This reminds us of a similar case involving Corsair. But the American company paid $5.5 million!

G.Skill is paying $2.4 million to avoid a long and costly lawsuit!

The story is similar to that of Corsair: G.Skill displays frequencies on its memory packages and consumers file a class action lawsuit. The reason? The brand did not sufficiently highlight the fact that the frequencies displayed are achievable after activating the XMP or EXPO profile on kits exceeding JEDEC specifications. This may seem trivial to enthusiasts who are familiar with the field. Otherwise, one might be tempted to assume that a DDR5 memory module labeled 6000 MT/s operates at 6000 MT/s without any additional manipulation.

In this case, G.Skill is settling the matter amicably and pulling out its checkbook to avoid a long and costly lawsuit. The brand has agreed to pay $2.4 million, half of which will cover administrative costs, attorney’s fees, and legal expenses. The remainder of the sum will be allocated to compensating customers, with bonuses of up to $5,000 for representatives of the class action.

If you live in the United States, you may be eligible for compensation if you purchased a memory kit between January 2018 and January 2026. You will need to submit a claim via this link, along with proof of purchase, of course.

As for G.Skill, the company will modify the packaging of its memory products as well as the technical specifications on its website. From now on, the words “Up to” and the warning “Requires overclocking or BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depend on system components, including the motherboard and processor” will be removed. These changes will provide more honest information to novice consumers.
