Currently, AMD is said to be working on making FSR 4 compatible with older graphics cards such as the RX 7000. However, we have nothing more than regular announcements(here) to go on. However, if you want something more concrete, you’ll have to turn to the hacker community who, via a recompiled INT8 DLL, are proposing the activation of AMD’s techno on generations prior to the RX 9000!
FSR 4: an unofficial technique for enabling upscalling on cards prior to RX 9000!
Some clever chap has recompiled an INT8 DLL to enable the technology on RADEON boards a little older than the current generation. So, using a tool like OptiScaler, it’s possible to activate FidelityFX Super Resolution 4 on RX 7000s… And even RTX 30s, it seems.
But there’s a catch: the RX 7000s don’t have the necessary hardware to run this technology under the right conditions. Being AI-based, FSR4 takes advantage of the RX 9000‘s IA FP8 acceleration. So, while there’s a visual improvement over FSR 3.1, performance won’t be as good. In fact, this is what a number of users have noted. In 1440p, we’re talking about an improvement in visual quality, with less flicker and the disappearance of the sharp edges associated with FSR 3.1, but performance is lagging behind.
The sweet spot would be the balanced mode setting, which helps to limit the loss of performance, while, depending on the title, there is also talk of increased latency and higher frame rates. As the technology is not natively supported, we can expect frame rendering times to increase by up to three times, which clearly affects gaming comfort.
The question now is whether AMD will manage to optimize FSR 4 sufficiently for it to run properly on its older cards, or whether the brand will simply abandon the project as unviable? And let hobbyists port the technology to older chips themselves!
