A few hours ago, AMD released its FidelityFX 2.0 SDK. It includes FSR 4 and FSR 3.1.5 image generation. But speculation began quickly, as the reds inadvertently published the full source code of FSR 4 on GitHub… The result was the discovery of an INT8 library in addition to the FP8 implementation planned for RDNA 4.
In other words, the manufacturer has, at the very least, tested a technical route to running FSR 4 on Radeon RX 7000 (RDNA 3), which lack the FP8 IA gas pedals of the RX 9000. What’s more, the SDK also mentions FSR 3.1.5 (frame generation), which clarifies the software roadmap. For the end user, FSR 4 remains a free module, integrated by the studios via the SDK at no extra cost, but dependent on game and driver updates. To put it simply, this leak seems to confirm AMD’s internal work on broader compatibility, even if nothing is officially guaranteed in terms of performance and image quality on RDNA 3.
FSR 4 for the RX 7000: a technical possibility for little gain?
The INT8 option could broaden the pool of compatible equipment, offering AI upscaling to RX 7000 owners. However, INT8 implies less precision than FP8, and therefore possibly inferior image quality and temporal stability (ghosting, fine detail), while performance could vary greatly depending on the game. It’s therefore possible that, in the end, this support will only be of benefit to the “big” RX 7000 references.
IF this rumor of support for RDNA 3 cards is not new, it should be noted that AMD has never officially communicated on the subject. At this point, everything suggests that FSR 4 will only be optimized for RDNA 4, but that a degraded variant for RDNA 3 could broaden the compatibility spectrum. So if you have an RX 7000 card, don’t expect any miracles here.
