AMD announced the Epyc 7004 series of processors, codenamed Genoa, late last year. These new monster processors will use the Zen 4 architecture and are obviously intended for servers. They are built with the TSMC 5nm process, and will have up to 96 cores / 192 threads. But despite the use of 5nm their size is just impressive: the SP5 socket has 6096 pins, 49% more than the 4094 of its predecessor and 46% more than the current Xeon socket of Intel, the LGA 4189. The following details will allow us to discover the AMD SP5 socket that will host these monsters.
In order to realize this, pictures are not enough without a perspective. The SP5 occupies a size almost equivalent to 4 current Ryzen or… 1/3 of a mini-ITX motherboard: each processor measures about 75mm by 72mm.
AMD SP5: an impressive socket
The Epyc Genoa processors are due to arrive before the end of the year and AMD has certainly already delivered several of its big customers to qualify this new generation. The CPUs will go up against Intel’s Xeon-like processors Sapphire Rapids intel’s Xeon processors, also expected by the end of the year, which will also be DDR5 and PCIe Gen 5 compatible.
Videocardz has published in the last few hours a photo of an alleged EPYC Genoa processor showing the 12 chiplets installed on the SP5 package. This photo seems to be a mock-up of the chip layout.
