Phoenix-H and Raphael-H: the next AMD laptops

The next AMD Ryzen APUs with Zen 4 technology for high-performance laptops will be composed of two families: Phoenix-H and Raphael-H.

Phoenix-H and Raphael-H: More cores and IPCs but later…

So beware, this new batch of APUs for future laptops is not for tomorrow. The next generation that should arrive soon is based on Zen 3+ ( Rembrandt-H / Ryzen 6000 family ). This generation will use the intermediate process of TSMC called 6nm but will keep the maximum configuration with 8 cores and 16 threads. At the same time, Intel will offer mobile Alder Lake chips with up to 14 cores and 20 threads. In response, AMD is expected to offer a brand new family of APUs for high-end laptops designed with a higher number of cores sometime in 2023. The latter is called Raphael-H and will offer up to 16 cores and 32 threads under Zen 4. The move to Zen 4 should provide a significant jump in the IPC of future CPUs of the Reds. At the same time, Intel will continue to roll out its hybrid architecture and will probably come up with Raptor Lake-H or even Meteor Lake-H, which also promise improvements in IPC and an increase in the number of cores.

Phoenix and Raphael in 5nm but not before 2023?

The Phoenix APUs will therefore be under the Zen 4 architecture and will move to 5nm etching with up to 8 cores and 16 threads, as well as an updated Navi GPU architecture. These APUs will be launched around 2023 and will come with TDPs below 40W. The family is expected to be targeted at low-power and high-end mobility platforms. While until now the code name Raphael only referred to the upcoming AM5 socket desktop CPUs, the latest rumors suggest that they will be coming to high-performance laptops with Raphael-H chips. The Raphael-H chips will reportedly offer up to 16 Zen 4 cores, which will put AMD’s mobility lineup alongside its desktop offering. The graphics part of these Raphael-H APUs would be, a priori, less elaborate since these chips would be intended to be coupled with dedicated GPUs. Here is a table drawn up by Wccftech summarizing AMD’s mobile range. Phoenix-H et Raphael-H
