Xeon W-2500: competition for Threadripper 7000?

As we’ve seen, AMD’s Threadripper 7000 has done a lot of damage to Intel. At the same time, it’s hard to compete with a 96c/192t CPU when you have little better than a 56-core model. However, the company is trying something with its Xeon W-2500. A limp response that will be based on platform rather than performance!

Xeon W-2500: only 26 cores, no better!

Sapphire Rapids - Xeon W-2500

This family of processors is designed for motherboards equipped with LGA-4677 sockets. These processors also feature four memory channels, but are distinguished by a consequent number of PCIe 5.0 lines: these processors have a total of 64 PCIe 5.0 lines, compared with 48 out of a total of 88 with the Threadripper 7000.

Otherwise, in terms of CPU configurations, we find models with 8 cores to a maximum of 26 cores. In terms of frequencies, these CPUs run at 4.5 GHz in turbo mode (W3-2525) and can reach 4.8 GHz for the fastest models. TDPs range from 175W to 250W for the most power-hungry model. Finally, L2 cache memory is 2 MB per core, while L3 is between 22.5 MB and 48.75 MB. Details:

  • W3-2525: 175W – 8c/16t – 22.5 MB L3 – 4.5 GHz
  • W3-2535: 185W – 10c/20t – 26.25 MB L3 – 4.6 GHz
  • W5-2545: 210W – 12c/24t – 30 MB L3 – 4.7 GHz
  • W5-2555X: 210W – 14c/28t – 33.75 L3 – 4.8 GHz
  • W5-2565X: 240W – 18c/36t – 37.5 Mb L3 – 4.8 GHz
  • W7-2575X: 240W – 22c/44t – 45 Mb L3 – 4.8 GHz
  • W7-2595X: 250W – 26c/52t – 48.75 MB L3 – 4.8 GHz
