The leaks about the performance of Alder Lake CPUs are starting to intensify. A few days ago, the i7 12700K was able to reveal more precise indications of its potential through the CPU-Z integrated benchmark. Now it’s the i9-12900K’s turn to show off, also under Cinebech R20 and AIDA64. The version that passes under CPU-Z is a “QS” CPU, that is to say a sample with more maturity than the “ES” versions we have been able to trace so far. We can consider that the QS samples are almost identical to the final production that will be in the shops.

Beware of the 5950X and Windows 11 comparison

The i9-12900K tested here is installed on a B660 motherboard in DDR4 at 3600Mhz, all running on a Windows 11 OS. So we will keep in mind these two previous points:

  1. The platform used may not be the one that gets the best performance from the i9-12900K. The DDR4 3600 can be considered as a low-end element for this CPU.
  2. The comparison that comes, with an AMD CPU, is to be relativized considering the impacts on the performance of Windows 11 for the moment.

CPU-Z Single-core and multi-core The i9 12900K tested here reaches a single-core performance of 827 points. Its big brother the Core i9-11900K is able to score 682 points while the Ryzen 9 5900X and Ryzen 9 5950X offer 648 and 647 points respectively. This is a really impressive number.

i9-12900k In terms of multi-core performance, the Core i9-12900K achieves 11,456 points and is therefore almost on par with the 11,856 points of the AMD Ryzen 9 5950X Cinebech R20: The iconic CPU performance test allows us to confirm the trend: the 12900K achieves a single-core performance of 768 points and 10,545 points in multicore compared to the 650/10480 points of the AMD Ryzen 9 5950X.

i9-12900K Finally, a run under AIDA64 with all high-performance cores at 4.90 GHz and low-power cores at 3.70 GHz shows that the 12900K achieves a power consumption of up to 257.09W with a temperature peak at 108ºC . On his post, however, the tester states that with the use of a proper AIO, he manages to bring this temperature below 90ºC.
