Seagate has announced the start of deliveries of its new hard drives featuring its new Mozaic 4 platform. With this platform, the company is offering a new drive with capacities of up to 44TB. Deliveries have now begun for a cloud service provider, while this model is currently undergoing testing and technical validation with other customers.

Seagate’s 44 TB hard drive!

With this new hard drive, Seagate offers us a new benchmark that adopts a 3.5″ format. Internally, we find the brand’s new Mozaic 4 platform. The latter features a total of 10 platters, each offering a capacity of more than 4TB of storage. Recording is based on HAMR and CMR technologies. The company’s communications position this newcomer as a more technologically advanced alternative to Western Digital’s new 40TB drives, which rely on EAMR and UltraSMR technologies.

In terms of specifications, these new drives run at 7200 rpm and should offer theoretical transfer rates of around 300 MB/s. But what interests customers is power consumption and storage density. In this regard, by switching from the old 30TB drives to these new 44TB models, hyperscalers would save nearly 800,000 kWh per year with equivalent storage capacity. They would also save space by gaining up to 100 square feet, which, for the same volume, allows for a net increase in storage capacity.

As we have seen recently, hard drives are also in high demand for mechanical storage. These offer very large capacities, allowing large volumes of data to be handled, which is ideal for training artificial intelligence models, a sector that is currently booming!

However, we still have no idea what prices Seagate will charge, but there is no doubt that the bill is likely to be hefty.
