On laptops, Alder Lake is also ahead of the others

The arrival of Alder Lake sounded like the first step of Intel’s comeback, at least that’s how the hotheaded boss of the blues wants to sell us his story. In reality, however, it is difficult to contradict him and our tests prove that this twelfth generation has really reshuffled the cards. On the laptops, the mass is also said. Worse ( or better ), the Alder Lake are also ahead in terms of efficiency.

Alder Lake in laptops: the i7-12700H outperforms its rivals

Our colleagues at Noteboockcheck carried out a multitude of tests and it must be said that the i7-12700H impressed them particularly. Not only is it a powerful processor, but it’s also a relatively efficient one. Surprisingly, the Alder Lake processor matches the performance per watt of the Apple M1 Pro at 40W in benchmark suites like Cinebench R23. The Core i7-12700H also plays with ease against AMD’s Ryzen 5000 series, such as the Ryzen 7 5800H and Ryzen 9 5900HX.

Intel Alder Lake CES 2022 This makes the Alder Lake Architecture seem particularly suitable for laptops. The i7-12700H has 14 cores and 20 threads (8x P-Core + 6x E-Core) for a TDP of 45W which turns into 115W when pushed to the limit.

Better than all AMD and as good as the Apple M1 pro in “low power”?

If we consider all the 20 benchmarks performed, the i7-12700H is on average 26% better than the Ryzen 7 5800H. With differences that can go up to more than 80%. On Cinebench R23, which simply measures CPU performance, the new Intel i7 is superior to any other CPU on the market, regardless of power consumption. And even when we want to limit this consumption to 40W, it is able to match the performance of the Apple M1 Pro SoC, and to outperform its direct rivals such as the AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX or the Ryzen 7 5800H. This observation leads to a simple conclusion: AMD has fallen asleep on the laptop market and has nothing, in the short term, to compete with Intel’s hybrid architecture.
