Micron has announced a new range of SSDs, the 4600 series, with a PCIe 5.0 interface and a maximum capacity of 4TB. In short, this series looks promising from a performance point of view, and the brand is already putting forward the argument of artificial intelligence. It’s quite amusing to see how brands turn their marketing towards fashionable use cases. Today it’s AI, tomorrow it’ll be something else, whatever.

4600: 4TB PCIe 5.0 SSDs from Micron!

Micron 4600

In classic Micron fashion, this is a series of SSDs in M.2 2280 format, with a PCIe 5.0 x4 interface. This interface should guarantee high data rates, and it does. In fact, at best we find sequential read speeds of up to 14.5 GB/s, compared with 12 GB/s for write speeds. Random performance is also high, with a maximum of 2,100,000 IOPS for both reading and writing.

In terms of capacity, as we’ve said, at best we’ll have a 4TB SSD. However, this series will come in 2TB, 1TB and 512GB models, with varying levels of performance depending on capacity. Here, the slowest SSD, in 512 GB, boasts read speeds of 10.3 GB/s, write speeds of 5.78 GB/s and random performance of 800,000 read IOPS and 1,200,000 write IOPS .

Finally, internally, we know that Micron will be using its latest memory chips: G9 Nand. Unfortunately, we won’t know more about the memory controller used.
