Yesterday, Intel officially announced its Xeon W-3400 and W-2400 processors, codename: Sapphire Rapids. On the program, massive CPU for servers with up to 56 cores and running at up to 4.8 GHz.

As usual, when we talk about professional hardware for servers, the numbers are breathtaking. This is normal, as this type of hardware is not intended for domestic workloads, but works intensively on large volumes of data.

W-3400: CPUs with up to 56 cores and up to 4.8 GHz!

Intel Xeon W-3400

This is why these Xeons have a large number of cores. Indeed, the smallest model of the 3400 series, the W5-3425, already has at least 12 cores and 24 threads. This figure is increased to 56 cores/112 threads for the W9-3495X. In terms of frequency, the fastest models have a boost frequency of 4.8 GHz with a base frequency of between 1.9 GHz and 3.2 GHz. As for the TDP, they range from 270W to 300W. There is also support for PCIe 5.0 via a total of 112 lines for the CPU.

Besides, all W-3400 chips have eight memory channels and can take up to 4TB of RAM. The set also supports DDR5 4800 MT/s ECC or not.

As for prices, this series ranges from $1189 for the W5-3425 (12c/24t) to $5889 for the W-3495X (56c/112t).

The W-2400: more accessible, more mainstream!

Xeon W-2400

With the W-2400, we find more affordable CPUs with less cores. Indeed, the cores/threads configurations start at 6/12 to end at 24/48. The cache memory is also less important with a maximum of 45 MB of L3. As for the PCIe lines, they are reduced to 64, but we keep the support of DDR5 4800 MT/s, but up to a maximum of 2TB via four memory channels. Finally, the TDP are less crazy with values between 120W and 225W.

Finally, the pricing is also much more accessible with a price range between $359 and $2189. Note that, as for the 3400, some models can be overclocked, the X models.
