Last week, a rumour surfaced that AMD had entered into discussions with Intel. The discussion concerned a potential partnership, with the Reds entrusting part of their CPU production to Intel, based on the 18A process used by the Blues. However, in an interview, AMD’s CEO gave us a very political response, and in the end said nothing more.
So, no Intel AMD partnership?
Currently, AMD relies almost exclusively on TSMC for the production of its processors. However, given the tensions in China and the Trump administration’s recent strategic changes, a partnership with the Blues didn’t seem too far-fetched. Lisa Su has not formally denied this so as not to offend anyone, but we’re guessing it’s a no-go:
“Well, as you know, the supply chain is something we work on, you know, very, very meticulously. I think we have a very strong supply chain. We are, certainly, very partnered with, you know, TSMC through our supply chain.
Going back to your earlier question, we absolutely prioritize the U.S., because I think it’s super important. It’s the “US AI stacks”. We want to have as much as possible in the U.S.”
As we can see, the CEO’s answer basically indicates that they’re fine with TSMC (TSMC’s Zen 6 in 2nm), but that they’re looking for US production as much as possible. We also know that the Taiwanese foundry, to avoid being slapped on the wrist by Trump, is investing in the US. The pattern is clear: AMD continues to work with the Taiwanese company, but wants its chips to come out of U.S.-based production sites. At least, that’s how we interpret Lisa Su’s response.
