Memory capacities are about to increase again… But on the notebook side. Micron has announced that it is working on DDR5 SO-DIMM memory kits featuring 12 GB per module!

DDR5 SO-DIMM: capacities of 12 GB per module from Micron!

Micron DDR5 SO-DIMMSince the advent of DDR5, things have quickly gone haywire when it comes to RAM module capacities. Until now, we’ve had a choice of 4GB, 8GB, 16GB and so on. Recently, however, we’ve been able to choose 24GB and 48GB modules, so-called “non-binary” configurations. Of course, the advantage lies in the improved memory capacities compared with traditional kits. With a motherboard with two RAM slots, for example, you can obtain a 96 GB configuration!

In short, we learn that Micron is also planning memory kits of this type in SO-DIMM format, a format commonly used in laptops in particular. However, we’ll have to make do with 12 GB/array kits. In terms of frequencies, the memory would run at 5600 MT/s at its fastest. Slower versions will also be offered: 5200 MT/s and 4800 MT/s.

As for prices, a number of kits can be found on Amazon.co.uk, with a 12 GB 5200 MT/s module priced at £44.99 (€52.64). The 24 GB 5600 MT/s kit is priced at £87.99 (€102.94).
