Core Ultra 9 285K: behind Ryzen 9 9950X in applications?

Via El Chapuzas Informatico, we find a whole compilation of results gleaned here and there concerning the new high-end Intel and AMD processors. Indeed, the Spanish media outlet has got its hands on Cinebench scores for the Ultra 9 285K and Ryzen 9 9950X. Of course, neither of these CPUs has been released, so we’re left with an Intel CPU in the qualification phase and a Ryzen 9 in the engineering sample stage!

Ultra 9 285K vs Ryzen 9 9950X: AMD has the edge in efficiency!

Core Ultra 285K cinebench

On Cinebench R23 in multi-threaded mode, Intel’s CPU scores 43,118 pts with a power consumption of 250W. As it stands, this model already boasts 17.5% higher performance than a Core i9 14900K. From one generation to the next, things are off to a good start.

However, when you add the Ryzen 9 9950X to the equation, the situation becomes even more tense. With a power consumption of 160W, AMD’s processor scores 42,336 pts, a difference of just under 2%. Now, if we drop the ballast on the AMD side, the Ryzen 9 9950X now achieves a score of 46,090 pts, 6.8% higher performance, ouch. In this scenario, AMD clearly has the efficiency advantage.

On other benchmarks, such as Geekbench 5, the new Intel CPU shows only a small performance gap with the single-core 14900K. On others, such as WebXPRT4 and Speedometer, performance is even lower than the current generation, while on CrossMark, the gap in favor of the Arrow Lake-S CPU is 6.37%.

Now, we must also bear in mind that this performance was measured on a CPU in the qualification phase. Admittedly, if development is more advanced on a QS than on an engineering sample (ES), we can still expect improvements between now and launch.
