AMD overtakes Intel on the stock market

AMD has just achieved what no one thought possible even 6-7 years ago. Its market capitalization has just surpassed Intel’s, for a moment. This performance will not surprise those who discovered AMD with its Ryzen… But the others will remember the not so distant times when the future of the company seemed to be counted.

To those who have memory: AMD comes back from (very) far

This performance materialized a few days ago with the sudden increase in AMD’s market capitalization. This is the consequence of the official announcement of its purchase of Xilinx for 49 billion dollars on Monday, 15 months after the announcement of the beginning of negotiations. This acquisition, which did not make the same waves as others, is nevertheless one of the largest in the history of technology, behind Dell, which paid $67 billion for EMC in 2015, and the recent purchase of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft for $68.7 billion. The final closing of that deal pushed AMD’s market capitalization to $197.75 billion, surpassing Intel’s $197.24 billion by $51 million. But the sequence was positive for the Reds, who in the process broke another record by taking 25.6% of the global x86 chip market for the first time. But the stock market is one thing, an important indicator but sometimes disconnected from the real economy.
