AMD confirms that its Radeon 7000 will not make Greta laugh

Without real surprise, AMD has just admitted that its next Radeon RX 7000 should suffer from an increase in power consumption… A priori a necessity to increase performance and follow the competition. AMD will not be less energy consuming with RDNA 3 but it will do “less worse” than its green competitor.

Radeon 7000: better performance per watt but higher power consumption

The demand for performance in gaming and computing is accelerating, and at the same time the underlying process technology is slowing down considerably, as is the rate of improvement. So power levels will continue…we have a multi-year roadmap of very significant efficiency improvements to offset that curve, but the trend is there ( Sam Naffziger, senior vice president, Corporate Fellow and Product Technology Architect at AMD ). If you have to read between the lines, it means that AMD’s next chips will be more efficient, but the race for performance will result in higher power consumption than the previous generation. Officially, AMD proclaims that the RDNA3 architecture will bring about 50% more performance per watt consumed compared to the current RDNA2 architecture. But obviously to deliver a significant performance improvement over the current generation of GPUs, AMD will have to increase the overall power consumption of its cards. The situation seems even more critical at Nvidia, whose new generation should break records for power consumption. On this issue, Intel is surprisingly silent about its next GPUs… Source : TH
