AMD AM5: DDR5 only?

The next AMD Ryzen 7000 processors (Zen 4) should only come with DDR5. Thus, unlike Intel AMD would make a major switch by introducing its new AM5 platform (Intel having launched Alder Lake with possible solutions in DDR4 and DDR5). So all future X670, B650 and other chipsets will be DDR5. Some rumors indicated that a possible A620 chipset could support DDR4, for the moment this possibility seems to move away.

Zen 4 AM5 Considering the price of DDR5, this choice for AMD is clearly double-edged. Indeed, without a significant drop, the prices of future AMD platforms will be strongly up. Concerning DDR5, AMD will inject several new technologies to take advantage of the performance of the new memories. In particular, the Extended Profiles For Overclocking (EXPO) technology, this new feature will allow AM5 cards to store two memory overclocking profiles:

  • A profile optimized for high bandwidth (Higher Frequency)
  • A profile optimized for low latency (Tighter CAS Timings)

For the moment we do not know if this technology comes as a replacement or accompanies AMD RAMP ( Ryzen Accelerated Memory Profile ). Things should become clearer soon since several information suggest that AMD will take advantage of the Computex (May 24-27) to make a complete demonstration of its future range.
