Is the end in sight for high prices in the computer components market? That’s what Acer CEO Jason Chen seems to suggest; he believes PC prices could peak around the middle of 2027, after which declines could begin. On the one hand, we’re tempted to say “finally,” while on the other, we remain cautious about these claims. In the meantime, prices are expected to continue rising through the fourth quarter of 2026.
Acer: Price Cuts in the PC Sector in 2027?
An improving situation:
According to statements made by the CEO to Taiwan’s Economic Daily News, the news is fairly positive. He states that DDR4 and DDR5 memory are no longer in short supply and that the situation is similar for CPUs. As a reminder, with the boom in agent-based AI, AMD and Intel faced a sudden surge in demand for processors. He notes, however, that supply for some entry-level and mid-range models remains tight, but that, overall, the situation is improving… Although this improvement isn’t (yet?) noticeable in stores.
According to him, increased production by Chinese manufacturers CXMT and YMTC is playing a role in this situation. In fact, it is thanks to these companies that the situation will not remain critical until 2030, as some seem to be predicting.
But before that, more price hikes are on the way…
In the meantime, however, price increases are expected to continue.PC prices are projected to rise another 5 to 20% in the fourth quarter of 2026. Similarly, TrendForce indicates that contract prices for DRAM could rise another 13 to 18% in the third quarter, compared to 10 to 15% for NAND. As for AMD, we’ve recently seen reports indicating a 10% increase in the price of Ryzen CPUs.
Only time will tell whether Acer’s CEO’s announcement will come to fruition. In the meantime, since Acer is a major player in the pre-built PC market, we’re paying close attention to what its CEO has to say.
