An RTX 5080 looks like a Christmas tree in GTA V with DLSS 5

It certainly seems that DLSS 5 Neural Rendering is a technology that’s—to put it mildly—a real strain on NVIDIA hardware. While we wouldn’t go so far as to say it might blow up your graphics card, it’s still a strain on your hardware. Here, we have the case of a Reddit user whose RTX 5080 (MSI Ventus 3x) started displaying artifacts after enabling the technology in GTA V via a mod.

GTA V + DLSS 5 = RTX 5080 displaying artifacts!

A hardware issue exposed by enabling DLSS 5?

GTA V DLSS 5

To put it simply, the owner had had the graphics card for a good month before artifacts appeared on the screen. The reason appears to be linked to the installation of the DLSS5 mod for GTA V, which was already heavily modded. The game was running smoothly at around 80 frames per second before the system froze. The user had to restart the PC only to find that it wouldn’t boot properly. With the Ryzen 9 9950X3D’s iGPU, everything worked perfectly. When the graphics card was reinserted, the problems returned—so the graphics card was indeed the culprit.

A memory issue?

From what we can see in the short video shared by the owner, the problem appears to be related to the graphics card’s memory. Indeed, the display flickers and artifacts appear on the screen—in short, it’s not a pretty sight. This type of problem can also occur when the memory has been overclocked a bit too aggressively, for example. However, wax469 states that he hasn’t adjusted the clock speeds.

In short, in this context, DLSS 5 merely exposed a potentially existing issue with the card without actually causing it. Based on the initial feedback we’ve received, the technology seems to be demanding on the hardware, and power consumption increases rapidly when it’s enabled. In fact, one RTX 5090’s power cable melted after the feature was enabled, for example.
