And so it continues. With this series of RTX 5000 cards, we haven’t heard the last of the stories about burnt and/or melted power connectors. This time it’s on Reddit, where user ivan6953 has seen his RTX 5090 go up in smoke. What’s more, in this case, even the connector on the power supply side has taken a beating. In short, a configuration to be redone for having used a 12VHPWR cable from Moddiy (link).
Another RTX 5090 goes up in smoke… With its power supply also!
This time, is it the user’s fault (no)? In this story, the user in question on Reddit says he saw his graphics card, an RTX 5090, go up in smoke. Even though it was correctly plugged in, with a correctly inserted cable… But that didn’t stop his card and its power supply from burning up.
Unfortunately, ivan6953 wasn’t using the cables provided by either the power supply or the graphics card. He was using a 12VHPWR from Moddiy and it was the old standard (ATX 5.0) not the new one, the famous 12V-2×6 (ATX 5.1). Unfortunately, he doesn’t know what to do, as he suspects that his after-sales service requests may be rejected for using the wrong cable.
For the record, his cable has been working fine up until now with an RTX 4090, but the problem arose while he was playing Battlefield V when he smelled something burning. Naturally, he immediately switched off his PC and quickly noticed the damage. Incidentally, in this case, his power supply, an ROG Loki, took more damage than his graphics card. But in the end, it didn’t matter, because he was left without a PC.
Clearly, the stories of melted cables/connectors aren’t going to magically end there. Until something is actually done about it, the cases of burnt cards will continue, no matter what NVIDIA says. It’s not right either that you can’t use the cable you want or your configuration will go up in smoke. Especially given the price of the cards and the low availability of RTX 50s at the moment.
