We hear about graphics cards melting pretty often—in fact, the cause usually lies with the 12V-2×6 power connector, which causes quite a few problems. But this time, we’re dealing with a bit of a mystery, since it’s the backplate that’s melting. In fact, this is a rebuilt HPPC, and the area with the RGB lighting is affected!
The backplate lighting on an RTX in an HP PC is melting!
The cause is still unknown:
It’s hard to say exactly which GPU model we’re dealing with.Unfortunately, the part number isn’t marked on the card, and there’s no label on the backplate to help identify the model. However, based on the photos, it could be an RTX 4070 or an RTX 4080 from an HP Omen PC. In any case, this type of card regularly ends up on the secondhand market, as the cards are removed from PCs and then resold.
Additionally, we can see that the backplate has been overheated around the diamond-shaped cutout through which the backplate’s lighting shines. The cutout is warped and even has holes in it due to the heat. The user also notes that the PC’s fans were not running; temperatures inside the system must have risen, which did not help the card’s condition. However, it’s not impossible that another issue is to blame, such as a short circuit in the lighting area where an underlying component—like a VRM, for example—may have overheated severely.
In any case, this isn’t very reassuring for the future, since such a situation could potentially happen again. Furthermore, according to the owner, the plastic used around the LED seems to be quite heat-sensitive, while the RGB lighting still appears to be working.
