He regularly checks his 12V-2×6, which ends up burning out anyway

The 12V-2×6 is a finicky connector. As you know, you have to plug it in all the way, not bend it too much, burn some sage, and pray on a full moon night to make sure everything goes smoothly. And even once it’s plugged in, you have to make sure thermal cycles don’t cause the connector to shift. It’s enough to drive you crazy. Today, we’re learning that, despite regular inspections, this Reddit user still saw his power connector melt. We’re talking about unplugging and plugging it back in every three months and tucking the cable away every month!

It must be said that our user’s setup is quite demanding. The owner uses an MSI RTX 5090 Suprim, paired with a Corsair RM1000x power supply equipped with a 16-pin Type 4 cable.

Aware of the potential issues and how things can go wrong with this type of connection, the user undertook thorough monitoring of his setup. For example, we learned that every three months, the cable was unplugged and plugged back in to check that it wasn’t overheating. Every month, he pushed the connector back in to ensure it didn’t shift over time. Finally, his card was mounted vertically, and the power connector remained straight for 7 to 9 cm before curving. Additionally, he had a monitoring panel that tracked activity on the connector at both the GPU and power supply ends.

In short, a conscientious user who takes good care of his equipment… But whose poorly designed connector eventually melted. Be careful, though—this isn’t a catastrophic meltdown like we’ve seen in the past, but one of the pins did end up melting.

Be careful not to unplug it too often either!

Unfortunately, in addition to being finicky, this connector shouldn’t be handled too much. In fact, official manufacturer specifications generally specify only a limited number of plug-and-unplug cycles for optimal performance. For example, Corsair and Seasonic specify 30 cycles. Beyond that, gaps may form between the pins, and contact may no longer be optimal. In any case, the machine’s owner still had a few cycles left.
