Shortly before Computex, AMD announced the launch of a new processor, the Ryzen 7 7700X3D. On paper, it’s similar to the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, but with slightly less impressive specs. The goal was to offer a gaming-focused CPU that’s slower but also more affordable than the famous Ryzen 7 7800X3D. Unfortunately, at launch, nothing went as planned. This model is selling for a price similar to—if not higher than—its big brother!

Ryzen 7 7700X3D: A Failed Launch?

A quick look at the specs:

7800X3D

Just like the 7800X3D, this model is a processor that utilizes a total of 8 Zen 4 cores and 16 threads. It also benefits from a large cache capacity with 96 MB of L3 cache, made possible by the inclusion of 3D V-Cache. Finally, it features a base clock of 4 GHz and a boost clock of 4.5 GHz. Compared to the 7800X3D, its base clock is 200 MHz lower, while its boost clock is 500 MHz lower. However, it retains the same 120W TDP.

Too high a price:

For this launch, the processor is priced far too high. Currently, it retails in France for over 370 €. In contrast, the much more mature 7800X3D starts at €330. Clearly, this launch price won’t encourage day-one adoption. After all, why would anyone pay more for a processor that, ultimately, is slower? It doesn’t make sense.

Now, we’ll have to wait and see over the long term; eventually, prices will certainly drop, making this model more affordable… Especially since sales will take a while to take off, particularly at this price point… Internationally, the situation is similar: in the UK, the 7700X3D is priced at £289.99, compared to £299.99 for the 7800X3D at Overclockers.co.uk.
