Samsung unveils its new 990 Evo SSD, a model compatible with both PCIe 4.0 and PCIe 5.0. But don’t expect crazy performance either. Clearly, this is an SSD “for the masses”, designed to replace the current 970 Evo Plus.

990 Evo: Samsung’s new entry-level model?

Samsung 990 EvoOn the program, Samsung offers an SSD in M.2 2280 format. It is based on PCIe 5.0 x2 or PCIe 4.0 x4 interfaces. By default, it doesn’t seem to come with any heatsinks, the aim being to put it under your motherboard’s heatsinks.

Internally, we find Samsung’s in-house 3D-TLC memory coupled with an equally in-house controller. However, as this is an entry-level device, there is no DRAM cache, as is the case with the 990 Pro, for example. Naturally, all this contributes to sequential read/write performance of 5 GB/s and 4.2 GB/s respectively. Random performance is at best 700k IOPS and 800k IOPS in read and write.

In terms of endurance, the 1TB version of this SSD can write up to 600TB, while the 2TB version can write up to 1200TB.

In terms of price, Samsung has announced its new models at $124.99 for the 1TB version, versus $209.99 for the 2TB, all with a 5-year warranty.
