We’re looking forward to February 28, when AMD will officially announce its new RX 9000 graphics cards. While the broad outlines of these models are already known, there’s still one major point to be settled: price. No matter what AMD proposes, if prices are too high, consumers will turn to its competitor. For a company looking to consolidate its market share, this is not a good thing.
At present, if the MSRP is not known, a screenshot gives us a clue as to what it will be. For this, we can thank VideoCardz.
RX 9000: a price under $700?
While the slide in question doesn’t give the official sales price of the cards, it does give a valuable indication of what it might be. The company’s aim is to make its cards “more accessible”. It also states that 85% of gamers buy GPUs for less than $700, so it would be reasonable to assume that the company is positioning its cards below this price limit. So it remains to be seen whether the RX 9070 XT, the largest model in the series, will be sold for $699 or $649 or $599… Ditto for the non-XT RX 9070.
In any case, AMD could be offering us a serious generation that has the potential to seriously rival the RTX 5070 Ti and RTX 5070. Remember that the card should offer significantly higher performance than the previous-generation RX 7900 GRE. We’re talking about a 42% performance improvement for the 9070 XT over the previous-generation mid-range. What’s more, other rumors suggested performance equivalent to that of the RX 7900 XTX.
Of course, nothing is certain, and we’ll have to wait for the launch conference on February 28 to find out all the details. On the other hand, if the price is aggressive and stocks follow, AMD could make a very aggressive comeback in the sector. Let’s hope that’s the case, as competition is good in this kind of situation.
