RTX 4090: body-built but really necessary heat sinks?

This is the rumor that is currently circulating on the web: “What if the massive radiators that will equip the next RTX 4090 are not necessary after all?”. According to several sources including IgorsLab, when NVIDIA sent the specifications to its partners for the generation of RTX 4000, it mentioned a cooling system capable of dissipating 600 watts. These specifications are often sent out very early to give partners time to design their cooling systems.

So what has changed? Initially, NVIDIA still thought it was going to use Samsung’s 8nm silicon like on the Ampere graphics cards. But in the end, it is indeed the 4 nm from TSMC which was selected. The consequences for NVIDIA were very positive as they were able to readjust the TBP specifications from 600 to 450 watts. The radiator of the RTX 4090 Founders Edition is already a 3 slot model but most partners will offer even thicker cooling systems.

The good news should be the temperatures which should be rather cool thanks to these radiators on the oversized RTX 4090 but also allow to reach even higher frequencies. We’ll have to wait a few more days to find out more, but on our side, with our MSI RTX 4090 Suprim Liquid X, we’re not taking any chances!
