Quite simply, we love tinkering, and we love seeing what enthusiasts are capable of doing when they tinker with their PCs—both on the hardware and software sides. This particular project falls into the second category, since a user named O_MORES managed to get a setup from the early 2000s running on Windows 11! Yes, that’s right—it features a Core 2 Quad, an HD 4650 AGP, and DDR1 RAM. And get this: everything runs smoothly and is stable enough to run benchmarks or play Crysis!

Windows 11 runs perfectly on a setup from the early 2000s!

DDR1 RAM and an AGP graphics card!

Windows 11 DDR1 Q6600 HD 4650

So, we’re looking at a particularly old setup, since most of the components were released before the 2010s. In fact, when it comes to the processor, the machine features a Core 2 Quad Q6600, a quad-core Intel processor released before the Core i era in January 2007. As for the graphics card, it’s an old AGP HD 4650, a card that debuted in 2008, while the RAM is DDR1, which hit the market in the early 2000s as a replacement for SDRAM… And to tie it all together, we have an ASRock ConRoe 865PE motherboard.

And it runs smoothly:

On the system side, we have a stable version of Windows 11—at least stable enough to handle web browsing tasks, among other things. Video playback is also possible thanks to a small “hack” that enables the AGP x8 to function as well as hardware decoding for H.264. However, the user notes that the key to getting the system to work is installing the graphics card driver. The latest available version dates back to 2012 and is compatible with Windows 7, so some tweaking was required. Otherwise, the rest of the demo includes the ability to run 3Dbenchmarks without crashing, as well as the system’s capability to run Crysis smoothly.

Finally, it’s worth noting the support for BIOS systems (UEFI didn’t exist at the time) via Windows 11 IoT.
