With the arrival of its RX 9000, AMD is offering a new version of its upscaling: FSR4. This technology relies on the benefits of AI to work, and of course it’s only available on RDNA 4 GPUs. If you have an RX 7000 or older, forget it, you won’t be able to activate it… Unless you’re running a Linux system, CachyOS to be precise. Its recent update enables you to activate the technology with RX 7000s, for example.

CachyOS: it’s possible to activate FSR4 on an RX 7000!

CachyOSClearly, the system is appreciated by gamers for the performance it delivers. What’s more, this month it received a very interesting update, integrating a web-based package management system called packages.cachy.org. With this, the system also benefits from a number of patches correcting bootloader-related problems in particular.

However, there’s one feature of particular interest to us: the ability to enable FSR4 with graphics cards using RDNA3 architecture. This is something that AMD has been discussing for some time, but things don’t really seem to be moving. It’s easy to see why, since initial mod tests don’t paint a rosy picture, with performance at half-mast on RX 7000s.

Finally, if FSR4 activation is possible with RDNA3s, it’s thanks to Proton-CachyOS integration, a fork of Proton. In the world of Linux gaming, Proton is a layer that translates Windows instructions to run under Linux.

Originally developed by Valve for its SteamOS, we’re curious to see how an RX 7000 with the FSR4 active would perform in this environment. Will we see a drop in performance, as was the case with Cyberpunk 2077, or not? We’ll be on the lookout, don’t worry.
