Recently, there has been an upsurge in problems with Ryzen 9000s, particularly AMD’s 9000X3Ds. ASRock has spoken out, analysing the case of a burnt-out processor on an X870E Nova. His conclusion was that the motherboard was not the cause of the problem and that it was working perfectly well. What’s more, it’s recommended that you use the latest bios, 3.20. But you know that.
A convincing statement from AMD?
Finally, AMD’s communication indicates that the problem is linked to a memory compatibility issue linked to previous versions of the bios. This problem can lead to boggling at start-up with configurations that do not complete the POST(Power-On Self-Test). AMD also points out that if a configuration does not complete this procedure, it is not because the CPU is H.S. and that many factors can come into play.
Despite the patch deployed by ASRock, problems continue to crop up. In particular, this morning we heard about a burnt-out Ryzen 9 9950X3D on an X870 Pro RS. The user indicated that he had updated his bios when he received his configuration three weeks ago. But we’ve been talking about 3.20 for a while now, since the end of February in particular.
Some stats:
The question now is what we’re actually dealing with. We’re talking about a hundred or so problems listed on Reddit… Not to mention the ones we don’t know about. Admittedly, out of the total volume of Ryzen 9000X3D sales, that’s not a lot. Is this some kind of panic over a phenomenon that has been amplified? Maybe, maybe not, but we’ll have to see if other cases surface in the future.
What’s more, it may not be a problem at all – there have always been processors that die. It remains to be seen what proportion of total sales these represent.
In the meantime, of the documented cases, 82% occurred on ASRock motherboards, 13% on ASUS, 4% on MSI and 1% on Gigabyte. Of these, the X870 chipset is the most involved: 45% compared with 33% for the B850 when a Ryzen 7 9800X3D is mounted on it. Finally, the 600 series chipsets are much less present, with 15% on the B650 and 7% on the X670.
