AMD puts an end to X3D processors on AM4

This news is beginning to sound like the end of the AM4. The AMD Ryzen 7 5700X3D processor is nearing the end of its life and will soon be disappearing from the shelves. Various Internet retailers have told Tweakers. This model represents the last CPU with 3D V-Cache technology compatible with the AM4 socket that is still accessible; as for the 5800X3D, a little more powerful, it has been sold out for almost a year. In recent months, these references have accounted for a very large chunk of socket AM4 sales, making it possible to build high-performance, low-cost gaming machines.

With the 5700X3 discontinued, AMD pulls the plug on AM4

The Ryzen 7 5700X3D is an AM4 processor with 8 cores / 16 threads based on Zen 3 and ideal for gaming thanks to 3D V-Cache. It runs at 3.0 GHz base speed, 4.1 GHz boost, and benefits from 96 MB of L3 (100 MB total with L2). With a TDP of 105 W and the use of DDR4-3200, it was the upgrade of choice for many owners of older-generation AMD machines. Until then, it was the symbol of AMD’s policy of sockets durability. This CPU fits effortlessly into an existing AM4 configuration, and even today delivers very solid gaming performance. However, a number of stores have confirmed that it is now “End-of-Life”, which means that supplies will cease as soon as stocks run out. At the same time, its price has slipped from around €225 to around €260 in recent weeks, having fallen below €200 last September. Finally, AMD has not commented on this withdrawal, while the 5800X3D has been unobtainable for almost a year.

In the mean time the AM5 platform is becoming more affordable, even if the B650 chipset is also EOL, forcing us to switch to the still somewhat expensive B850. All these signals suggest that the AM4 is on its last legs. If you’re looking for an upgrade on a limited budget, and if you find the 5700X3D at around €220-260, then go for it, as the FPS gain is clear compared with non-X3D AM4 chips. On the other hand, if the price is well above this level, you’ll have to decide to switch to the AM5 for better longevity and wider upgrade potential.
