Has AMD reached a glass ceiling with Zen 3? That’s the question we might be asking ourselves, given the opinions expressed by consumers. A survey carried out by 3DCenter.org shows that Zen 5 is receiving more than mixed reviews, with many considering the series to be under-performing, especially in games!
AMD’s Ryzen 9000s judged mediocre!
In life, there are hardware tests and the public’s perception of your hardware. It’s on this second point that this article focuses, since the survey conducted by our colleagues turns out to be rather interesting… Bear in mind, however, that only around 1,000 people voted in the survey.
From what we can gather, the participants think that the Ryzen 9000s are generally average, if not mediocre. In fact, only 21.1% of respondents expressed a positive opinion, compared with 23.7% who were negative. All the rest, 55.2%, i.e. the majority, have rather average opinions of this series.
What stands out most is that the performance gains are not strong enough in this series, especially in video games (23% of the eleven responses). Among the negative opinions, the one that stands out the most is once again the lack of overall performance (9%). However, there are still 12% who think it’s a good option, or who have already taken the plunge.
In any case, it’s important to remember that AMD has come a long way since its FX processors, which didn’t even get 10% positive reviews in 2011. It was with Zen 1 that everything changed, with over 70% positive reviews. However, with Zen 4 things seem to be turning around, with just over 50% positive reviews (the 7800X3D alone is an exception), while with Zen 5 we’re at around 20%.
Bad timing for Zen 5?
Finally, when you see what Zen 5 has to offer, you might think that the timing is very bad for AMD, since the company is releasing what appears to be its worst series, just before the launch of Intel’s Core Ultra. Once again, Arrow Lake is shaping up to be a very big series, with a lot of rough edges, and the Reds are likely to get a rough ride with this generation.
Moreover, as we’ve seen from the latest rumours, the company seems to be on the warpath to bring out a Ryzen 7 9800X3D as quickly as possible to limit the damage. In any case, we can’t help thinking that the Ryzen 9000s won’t have made much of an impact on the market. It’s a series that would have been ideal to rival Raptor Lake Refresh after all. But then, that’s to be expected when the company went for damage control and said that the Ryzen 7000X3D would still be the king of gaming.
